Can You Whiten Dentures?

A very common question by wearers of false teeth is, can you whiten dentures?

Tea, coffee, wine and tobacco can all lead to stains and everybody want to have gleaming white teeth, even when they are not their own.

However, whereas you can go to the dentist to have your natural teeth professionally whitened, dentures need to be treated differently.

Can You Whiten Dentures?Initially, dentures are color matched to any remaining natural teeth. Therefore, unless your original teeth were pure white then your dentures won’t have been colored pure white either.

Not everyone chooses pure white teeth for dentures, even when it is an option. Some are happy with having off white dentures. This can even apply when  a celebrity gets new teeth.

Many people swear by whitening false teeth with a selection of readily available household products.

The most popular homemade remedies for whitening teeth are baking soda, lemon juice, and vinegar.

Probably the most effective way is with the use of specialized cleaning tablets. The dentures are left for a specified period in a container which contains the cleaning solution.

The denture cleaning remedies usually contain stain removers, and in some cases special types of bleaching agents.

Although these products come in a variety of strengths, it is extremely unlikely that you could make your false teeth any whiter than the color they were when you originally got them.

If you want to get shiny white dentures, then you do have the choice of visiting a dental clinic in order to have new teeth made.

You could also opt to have dental implants made in white, although the process is more costly and extensive than just having a new set of false teeth made.

You would also have to take into account the color of any remaining natural teeth. You would probably want to have them professionally bleached otherwise your new white dentures will undoubtedly make your natural teeth look even more discolored.

Important Advice On Teeth Cleaning Products

  • Always remember to thoroughly check instructions on any product you wish to use to whiten your teeth.
  • Pay special attention to warnings about ingestion, as some products are dangerous if swallowed. Many denture cleaning products are only to be used for steeping the teeth in a container, and the product must be thoroughly rinsed off afterwards.

In conclusion, just because you have dental implants or false teeth doesn’t mean they have to remain discolored. You can whiten dentures, but they are unlikely to end up whiter than they were when they were new.
